Torre Grande
History
Torre Grande castle has amazing views looking in the direction of Valencia, Alicante and Madrid and it was for this reason that it developed as a major strategical site.
The castle was mentioned as early as 1264 in connection with Alfonso th Wise and later played a major role in the battle of Almansa 1707.
It was between (the hill of prisoners) and a stream at the bottom of the castle that 14000 Austrian troops stopped from Caudete to be recounted.
Inthe great battle boiling oil and stones were thrown from the medieval tower (originally called to the Tower of D.Enriquez) and was the very spot taht English, Dutch and Portugese enemy troops catipulted playin a key role in the beginning and the end of the battle.
It was this very scene that has been immortalized in the famous painting by Buonaventura Liglio of the great battle. It will again be the centrepiece during the battles 300 year anniversary celebrations scheduled for April 2007.
